ROUND TABLE

TOPICAL CINEMA: PERSONAL VERSIONS

ROUND TABLE OF THE JOURNAL "ISKUSSTVO KINO" (FILM ART) AND THE FESTIVAL KINOTAVR

In any circumstances and at all times an artist constantly reflects on what worries people here and now most. S/he must search for answers to eternal questions: what is happening to us, what we should not fear, and how to live. At the round table of "Iskusstvo kino" we plan to investigate this semantic field: the real calls of the time.

At the present, very disturbing historical moment, the organizers of the discussion wanted that Russian filmmakers should express directly their vision of the current situation, without any restrictions and obligations of professional allegiance, age, clan, worldview, or aesthetics.

The discussion will focus on individual versions of current events. This will allow us to record differences or unanimity in the understanding of current events, to evaluate the state policy in the sphere of its relationship to a fearless cinema about modern life, to understand how directors, producers and distributors assess the expectations of spectators. The diagnosis of the situation is supported by comparisons of professional's views on last year's films with audience evaluations in ratings and rankings of favourite Russian films.

ROUND TABLE

THE FILM INDUSTRY IN EUROPE AND RUSSIA: NATIONAL MODELS, A COMMON MARKET

In the complex political situation of our time it is especially important to preserve and develop the cultural and commercial links of the Russian film industry with its European counterparts. The latter is not uniform and consists of national cinematographies with their own traditions and peculiarities. However, both among themselves and with the Russian film industry, they are united by a long-term experience of co-operation, co-production, a common market and, in a certain sense, an opposition to the monopoly of Hollywood.

The round table of Kinotavr, with participation of leading Russian producers, distributors and cultural curators, is organised together with the company "European Film Promotion". Its purpose is the formulation of unrealized opportunities of dialogue and practical cooperation, of a better and fuller representation of Russian cinema in Europe, and of European cinema in Russia.
