Moscow, our days. A family of five lives in a suburb in a small and quite poor apartment: the head of the family Efim, his wife Ekaterina, her elderly mother and two teenage children, Anya and Andrei. Each has their job: the children are at school, going through all the difficulties and pains of puberty, from first love to alcohol and squabbles with teachers; the parents live in the mad rhythm of Moscow life, trying to earn money. Each of them has a whole range of problems, which worry them and require an outlet. Each of them dreams of support and human warmth. But, as so often happens, at home everything just gets worse: the mother fights with the daughter, the father cold-shoulders the son, and the relationship between the parents has nothing in common with love and happy union. Alevtina Romanova is a prison matron in a penal colony for women. There is only one thing that makes her stand out from the image of the strict inspector: her voice. The most notable opera singer would be jealous of it. But she rejected a career as a singer in her distant childhood and now, only occasionally when nobody is around, she sings to herself. But however much Romashka [Camomile] — as her friends playfully call her — tries to stay unnoticed, one of the prisoners secretly records her on her phone and spreads the video on the Internet. The recording immediately goes viral.

Alevtina is invited to Moscow to participate in the main song show of the country. The sincere desire awakens in her to change her life, but she is absolutely not ready for the competition. ICE HOLE

Russia, 2017, 16+

Production: League of Experimental Films, Cosmosfilm, Elixir Company

Trailer

Director: Andrei Silvestrov
Producers: Vadim Bogdanov, Tikhon Pendiurin, Andrei Silvestrov, Alexander Starikov
Cast: Andrei Rodionov, Ksenia Orlova, Dmitri Brusnikin, Mikhail Efremov, Denis Yasik, Anna Mongait, Denis Kataev

All day long the TV shows an ice-hole. Ice-holes are the theme of the day, a winter tradition that unites believers and sportsmen, stars and walruses, the president and the unemployed.
In the centre of the news reports are the topics of Baptism, fishing and the criminal chronicle. The president and a pike, the artist and the critics, the oligarch and the law enforcement team — they all meet at an ice-hole in search of solutions for their problems.

The jobless Muscovite, with bad habits, dives down an ice-hole for a wife, just like Sadko. The fairy-tale plots intertwine with documentary context, and it is no longer clear where reality ends. Remember Nietzsche: if you long gaze into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you.

The word «rok» in Russian means both rock music and fate. The film′s heroes, who want to conquer the musical Olympus of Moscow, are accompanied by both. This troika is not even a group yet, not a team, and probably not even friends. But that′s at the beginning. The further the heroes leave home, the more dangerous their adventures and the people they met on the way become, and the more strongly the children change inside. The film is a journey, a search of the self, where the road to the dream is the greatest, most dangerous and unforgettable adventure in the life of the young provincial musicians.

Preserving the text of the play, the amazing dialogues, the brilliant characters, we have transposed the action into today′s Russian provinces and changed only one thing: the age of the heroes. In Anton Chekhov′s play the heroines are aged around 25; now they are 55. What does that do?

The heroes′ retorts, stylistically inappropriate from today′s twenty-year-olds, are absolutely organic for the older generation, the ‘Soviet’ intelligentsia.

The problems of Chekhov′s classical work concerning the search for a meaning in life, the loss of ideals, the fear before death without having achieved anything in the world, the desire to be useful to others — all these things are also a typical attribute of the Soviet intelligentsia. The film brings out the continuity of Russian culture and the fear to lose the link between generations.

Chekhov′s carefully recreated play is shown in the language of contemporary cinema that will allow the spectators to see afresh the axiomatic text and realize its continued urgency.

The film′s hero, Ilyich, cannot understand what′s wrong with him. Ilyich is a former «mole», an external observation agent in the KGB, then FSB. A skilled instructor. Now he is retired. From loneliness, he continues to watch those who catch his attention and curiosity. The doctor diagnoses him with empty sella syndrome (the syndrome of an empty Turkish Seat), which poses no danger for society…

Sella turcica is the Latin name for the part of the brain where the pituitary gland (hypophysis) is located; in English, it is called the Turkish Seat. Migraines, dizziness, speech disorders, memory problems, asthenia — all these are signs for a disturbance in this area, called in medicine «Syndrome of the Turkish Seat».
